Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Fat Face

Marine Terrace, 8 High St, Rhosneigr LL64 5UQ, UK – 01407 810893

This a really fab clothes shop with huge diversity of clothing. My most favourite clothes shop by far. It is slightly overpriced but you do get quality for your money. I bought 2 tops from here this summer one a smart casual the other a pretty white cotton lace edged top. I've worn them countless times and they've washed well still looking like new. A downfall is there aren't any big sizes plus they're very seasonal

Excellent store jammed with all the latest Fat Face clothes. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Shoreside Caravan Park

Crigyll View, Station Rd, Rhosneigr LL64 5QX, UK – 01407 810279

Busy campsite but well maintained. Good price and very friendly owners. Toilets and showers were cleaned frequently - not an easy job. Downsides - not that close to the beach, camping field has a few level points only, pretty noisy late on but all expected really. Overall I'd recommend.

We stayed at Shoreside for 10 days. The weather was fantastic and couldn't have wanted it any better. The site is really nice, quite near to RAF valley airport when they do their flight training, just during the week and not at weekend, it was very entertaining. I think there were 10 pitches on field in a mixture of Tourers and motorhomes, the view from our side was over looking golf course. The toilet block consists of toilets, washing facilities and showers. I didn't use it much as we all our facilities in our tourer. To get to the beach just follow the path through the static caravans and though gate and your by river, follow river until you get to sand dunes then take a left and follow river to beach then into the sea, the river is very shallow in some parts to be able to cross to beach. Our dogs loved the river with swimming and playing in the water. The beach is very clean and the sea so clean and water was quite warm. I used to walk my dogs very early in morning, miles and miles of beach with no one else on. It was a great holiday and I'd go back tomorrow, there are no restrictions with dogs on beach there. There are a couple of local shops nearby, however the bigger shops are on a retail park near Holyhead. It's a great place for everyone and was a great find for us, we will be back very soon.

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
